PARIS — A French soldier with the European peacekeeping force in Chad is missing and another was wounded after their vehicle strayed into neighboring Sudan, a French Defense Ministry official said Monday.
A recovery effort was met with hostile fire, said Commandant Dan Harvey, a spokesman for the EU peacekeeping force. It was not immediately clear who fired on the soldiers.
Cmdr. Christophe Prazuck with the French Defense Ministry said a French soldier is missing and another was rescued but is wounded. Their vehicle was destroyed, he said.
It was the first known such incident since EUFOR began mounting a peacekeeping force to protect refugees from Sudan’s Darfur region.
