TUCSON — Brad Hawpe’s timing was excellent Monday, on many levels.
On the same day the Rockies right fielder agreed in principle to a three-year, $17 million deal, he crushed a three-run homer in the first inning, helping the Rockies beat Arizona 7-5. It was a clear indication that Hawpe is getting his timing down.
“A home run is better than a jam shot or broken-bat, off-the-end- of-the-bat single,” said Hawpe, who has hit a homer, a double and a triple this spring, but no singles. “Right now, it’s (about) the right point of contact and the right extension afterward. If I’d gone 3-for-3 today with three broken-bat singles, I wouldn’t be like, ‘Wow, I was 3-for-3.’ That’s not the point right now.”
