Long delays in the Colorado Bureau of Investigation’s DNA testing have prompted northern Colorado law-enforcement authorities to plan a regional crime lab.

Weld County Sheriff John Cooke is leading the drive to bring the law-enforcement agencies together, said Boulder County Sheriff’s Department Cmdr. Phil West.

“We can’t afford to have an expert on staff,” West said. “If we could pool our resources and bring in some experts, that would be the way to go.”

“We are already sharing resources, but we need the DNA, and we need the facility; we need all the disciplines under one roof,” Cooke said.
