Workers at a sewage treatment plant in Commerce City discovered a “small fetus” in a filter screen Sunday morning, police said today.
The Adams County coroner’s office has not yet determined how far along the fetus was, or whether it was viable outside the womb, said Officer Lanissa Blevins, a spokeswoman for Commerce City police.
Blevins said police believe they have identified the mother but have not located her.
Steve Frank, spokesman for Metro Wastewater Reclamation District, said this was not the first time the plant has made such a discovery.
“It’s not common, but it happens often enough that it’s not uncommon,” he said.
Metro Wastewater treats 140 million gallons a day, including waste from 5 metro-area governments representing 1.6 million customers.
Police are asking that anyone with more information call 303-287-2844.
