I’ve been called a home-wrecker, but never a matchmaker. Until now.
Steve Saunders, reporter/anchor at KMGH-Channel 7, was chosen as one of 5280 magazine’s Sexy Singles last year. At the time, I wrote: “And it’s good to see Ch. 7 anchor/reporter Steve Saunders on the roster. His wife, Pam, died of pancreatic cancer four years ago — and he’s a great guy, working for a cure, raising two boys. There’s a single to root for.”
Seems Nancy Sharp, a widow, really rooted for him.
“She read the column and gave me a call,” Saunders said. “You’re the unknown matchmaker.”
He proposed to Sharp on Sunday night at the Palace Arms. They plan to marry this summer, his two boys joining her twins, a boy and a girl, to make one big family. Sharp even sent me a thank-you note!
Music man.
Just about every band in Denver has played Cricket on the Hill — the extra-funky spot at Downing and 13th. Now it’s all over but the crying. The joint closes (at least temporarily) after a day-long musical throwdown March 15.
Owner Chris Rawles is dealing with cancer, the main reason he sold the bar and the building.
“It’s a great place,” says Rawles. “Lots of bands are able to come on down and play their own music. Big Head Todd played here. And the Subdudes.”
March 13 and 14, Cricket on the Hill will rock each night with five bands. On closing day, March 15, the music will start at 3 p.m. and go on until closing. Over the three-day send-off, look for Wanker, Buckwild, Horse, King Rat.
EATS!
The short list for James Beard Awards this year has Colorado up front: Steve Ells (Chipotle) and Sam Fox (North, Bloom, Sauce) for outstanding restaurateur, Montagna in Aspen for outstanding service, Richard Betts at Montagna and Bobby Stuckey at Frasca for wine and spirits professional, Fruition for best new restaurant and Mark Fischer from Six89 in Carbondale, Ryan Hardy from Montagna, Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson from Frasca and Alex Seidel from Fruition for best chef Southwest.
And look for June’s issue of National Geographic Traveler Magazine for a feature on Denver dining, including a look at Buckhorn Exchange, Taco de Mexico and Fruition.
City spirit.
The rumor mill is working overtime on who’s moving into NorthCreek. I told you that Hermès has booked a storefront; now we hear Loro Piana is moving in, with lots of talk too about Gucci. . . . Time to trim that mullet! The True Colors Tour finishes up @ Red Rocks July 5 with Cyndi Lauper, the B-52s, Rosie O’Donnell, Joan Armatrading and Carson Kressley. . . . Local guitarman and Realtor Eddie Turner is on the cover of Blues Revue magazine and on another European tour. . . . Sez who: “I am stunned, and I’m horrified.” Rosie O’Donnell
