The University of Colorado came away with the lead after the first day of the NCAA ski championships Wednesday in Bozeman, Mont.
The Buffs scored 186 points and led Northern Michigan by 33 points. The University of Denver is tied for third with defending NCAA champion Dartmouth and Middlebury at 141 points.
CU senior Maria Grevsgaard won her 10th race of the season and her school-record 18th with a first- place finish in the 5-kilometer freestyle. She was followed by teammate Lenka Palanova and DU’s Annelise Bailly. Alpine starts today, and the championships conclude Saturday.
Rapids win preseason match.
The Rapids improved to 3-0-3 in the preseason with a 3-2 win over Ipswich at the Arsenal Training Centre in England. Brazilian midfielder Rafael Gomes, who signed with the Rapids before Wednesday’s game, made an impact, scoring the first goal on a header off a corner kick. Midfielder Nick LaBrocca scored the game-winning goal.
Gomes most recently played with SD Santa Clara in Portugal and has played professionally in Brazil since 2000.
