NEW YORK — Merrill Lynch will eliminate 650 jobs, record a $60 million charge and stop making new home loans through First Franklin Financial, the subprime lender that former chief executive Stan O’Neal bought in 2006.

Most of the job cuts at San Jose, Calif.-based First Franklin will take place this month, Merrill spokesman Bill Halldin said.
