PEORIA, Ariz. — Left-hander Jeff Francis pitched four crisp innings Thursday, allowing two hits and two walks in a “B” game in Tucson. He admitted that a lot of batters were “doing a lot of first-ball hitting.”

Willy Taveras cranked a line- drive, two-run home run to left.

“I think the wind must have been with me,” Taveras quipped.
