Bitters are a classic cocktail ingredient, adding a hint of bitter along with spice to drinks like Manhattans and Old Fashioneds. From Eric Skokan of the Black Cat in Boulder, makes about 1 pint.

Ingredients

   Leaves of 1 artichoke

 2 cups vodka

   Peel of 1 grapefruit

 6 juniper berries

   Dash ground nutmeg

 1 whole clove

 1 cardamom pod

Directions

Place artichoke leaves in a glass bottle and fill with vodka. Allow to steep for 5 days. Add grapefriut peel, juniper berries, nutmeg, clove, cardamom. Allow to steep until mature, about 3 weeks.
