BOULDER, Colo.—Renown women’s equality sports expert and three-time Olympic gold medalist Nancy Hogshead-Makar has been appointed Title IX adviser at the University of Colorado, a position created as part of the school’s settlement of the football recruiting scandal.
Hogshead-Makar is a law professor at Florida Coastal School of Law who specializes in the federal law that provides for equal treatment for women in sports. CU announced her hiring on Monday.
She was a collegiate athlete at Duke University and qualified for the boycotted 1980 Olympics in Moscow. She won her three Olympic gold medals and a silver in swimming at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.
She serves as a legal adviser to the Women’s Sports Foundation, where she is a past-president, and co-authored the book, “Equal Play: Title IX and Social Change.”
Without admitting fault or liability, CU in December agreed to pay $2.85 million and to settle a lawsuit by two women who claimed they were gang-raped by football players and recruits at an off-campus party. The school also agreed to hire a Title IX adviser and hire an additional victim’s assistance counselor.
