Smithwick’s Irish Ale, $7.49 a six-pack

A certain celebration of all things Irish is upon us Monday, and no doubt many of you will be getting with the spirit(s) beginning this weekend. Rather than dive headlong into the obvious stouts, have a crack at the best-selling ale on the Emerald Isle.

Smithwick’s has been brewed in Kilkenny since 1710 (Note: Expect big party in two years.) and is now under the Guinness umbrella. It pours a clear, dark amber, with a medium-depth, persistent light- cream head. Malt is evident in the aroma, with a hint of floral hops. The malty sweetness is balanced with a touch of bitterness and a somewhat dry finish. Caramel is evident, as well. A smooth mouthfeel and alcohol by volume of 4.5 percent make this a fine session drinker, one you’ll buddy up to well whether you’re celebrating your heritage . . . or just frontin’.

And when you order, remember the “w” is silent: Tell your friendly beertender you’re having a “Smithick’s.” E. Smithwick & Sons Ltd., Kilkenny, Ireland; www.smithwicks.ie
