The plucky little western painted turtle faced its toughest test Monday in trying to become the state’s official reptile.

As the Senate considered a bill that would enshrine the turtle, Sen. Greg Brophy, R-Wray, offered an amendment to name another animal the state’s official reptile: the taxasaurus. Soon, the GOP unleashed a flurry of other purported reptiles as candidates for the official honor: the spendasaurus, the sue-asaurus, the envirosaurus, and the laborasaurus among them. In the end, the western painted turtle was saved by a procedural ruling and approved on a voice vote. The measure faces one more Senate vote before moving to the governor.
