A recent Castle View High School graduate who was once addicted to prescription drugs will be among the speakers Tuesday night at a community discussion of the abuse of pharmaceutical and over-the-counter medication.

The discussion will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Castle View High, 5254 North Meadows Drive in Castle Rock.

Speakers will include representatives of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, an emergency-room doctor and a substance-abuse counselor.

Abuse of prescription drugs — readily available in the medicine cabinets of many households — among teens has become more visible over the past few years.

Kids recently have been caught with prescription painkillers that hadn’t been issued to them at Castle View High, Castle View Middle School and Carmody Middle School in Lakewood.

“The abuse of prescription and over-the-counter medication has been in the news a great deal lately. We hope this information night will help answer some questions and clear up misconceptions about this important issue,” Douglas County School District spokeswoman Whei Wong said in an e-mail.
