A house fire broke out in north Denver about noon today, displacing a family of four, firefighters said.

The Denver Fire Department took several 911 calls about the fire in the 3700 block of Marion Street, and when firefighters first arrived, neighbors reported that a woman and children were in the home, said Lt. Phil Champagne, a department spokesman.

But the 25-year-old woman who lives there and her two boys, ages 5 and 3, had gone out to a convenience store just before the fire started.

No one was home, and no one was injured in the quick, intense fire, Champagne said.

A third child, who was with the woman in a babysitting arrangement, also escaped injury. The woman’s husband was at work.

The fire gutted the one-story, brick home with security bars on its front windows.

The family, who was not identified, is being helped by the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
