A woman who set five fires in her Lakewood home in an effort to kill her husband, son and daughter received a 48-year sentence Tuesday from a judge who said she should never again be free.

“I believe this was a well-thought- out, planned-in-advance arson,” Jefferson County District Judge Randall Arp said as he addressed Nancy Jean Jewett.

Arp imposed a total of 48 years — two sentences of 24 years on two counts of attempted first-degree murder stemming from the April 10 fire at the family home in the 400 block of South Balsam Street.

The judge said Jewett will have to serve 75 percent of the sentence before she becomes eligible for parole, by which time the 48-year-old Jewett will be more than 80 years old.
