If someone has absolutely no idea where to begin picking interior paint colors, how would you suggest they get started?
Always start with a rug or art piece. It is preferable to start with an Oriental rug, but if you are on a budget a great rug from a mall store or home center can set the mood. Trying to fit in a new rug after the fact is harder.
In my home, the dining room is my favorite room. It’s a very special place for eating and socializing. I’m European, so that’s all very important to me. The rug there was a gift from my mother. My father travels a lot and he purchased it in Yemen. It has blue and gold and pale terra cotta, so the colors in the dining room are very Tuscan and warm.
Rugs are also important because they ground your space. In a room that’s hardwood or tile and has no rug, you feel lost. Rugs define the area. And Oriental rugs are perfect because they tend to have borders and darker colors. People are using outdoor rugs on their patios in the same way.
