GOLDEN, Colo.—A Lakewood mother who admitted setting fires in her home while her family slept inside is being ordered to serve 48 years in prison.

Nancy Jean Jewett pleaded guilty in November to two counts of attempted first-degree murder.

Prosecutors had said she set five fires in her Lakewood home while her husband, son, daughter, and the daughter’s boyfriend were asleep in April 2007. She then headed to Black Hawk to gamble.

The occupants of the home awoke to the smell of smoke around 2:15 a.m. and evacuated safely.

Jewett’s now-ex-husband questioned the sincerity of her statement in court. She apologized to her family, saying she did not want to hurt them.

Jewett will not be eligible for parole until she’s at least 80 years old.
