BOULDER — A 16-year-old student fatally collapsed Wednesday afternoon at Fairview High School in Boulder, officials said. Bryce Atkinson was taken to Boulder Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said Briggs Gamblin, spokesman for the Boulder Valley School District.

“We’re devastated,” Gamblin said. “Our hearts go out to the Atkinson family.”

Because of his death, the school postponed a two-day culture week celebration that was supposed to begin Thursday, he said.

Instead, a day of silence was declared at the school Thursday, which would have been Atkinson’s 17th birthday, Gamblin said.

Atkinson, a sophomore, collapsed at 12:45 p.m. in front of several students, Gamblin said. School officials said the teenager had a pre-existing heart condition.
