COLORADO SPRINGS — The city of Colorado Springs has chosen to pay up on a lawsuit by police officers who claim they were shortchanged for off-the-clock work.
The two sides will be in federal court April 1 to approve the $5.25 million settlement, the city announced Thursday. The city will set up procedures to prevent off-the-clock work in the future, according to a statement. Officers in the case will get three annual payments starting this fall. The settlement includes all attorney’s fees, court costs and administration fees.
The money will come from the city’s general operating fund. Colorado Springs police officers brought suit against the city last year, claiming the Police Department “routinely discourages (officers) from submitting requests for overtime compensation or overtime slips for compensation for off-the-clock work activities,” the lawsuit stated.
