A 21-year-old University of Colorado student was killed during a robbery while he was celebrating spring break in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, authorities say.

David Parrish, a junior at CU, was fatally shot Wednesday after refusing to give money to two robbers in a shopping area near the port, a spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City said today.

Bystanders who witnessed the shooting captured the two assailants and held them until police arrived, the spokesperson said.

She declined to name the two suspects.

Bronson Hilliard, a spokesman for CU, decried the “very tragic, horrible event.”

He said Parrish was a geography major from Boulder. He did not have further information about the student.

Student-affairs officials are trying to confirm details of the shooting, and CU will provide more information later, Hilliard said.

Contacted at his home today, Parrish’s father declined to comment.
