GOLDEN — A 32-year-old Westminster man has received the maximum sentence of six years in prison for running over and killing an 8-year-old boy riding in a go-cart last June.
Sean Daniels, who was sentenced today, had pleaded guilty in January to leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, tampering with physical evidence and two traffic violations.
Quinton Von Duyke was killed in the crash. He was in the go-cart driven by his brother, Kaeden, 10, on West 96th Avenue near Pierce Street. Kaeden was thrown clear, but Quinton, who was wearing a seat belt, was killed.
Daniels drove away without checking on the boys or reporting the June 23 crash. He was arrested without incident nearly a week later while sleeping at a campsite outside Steamboat Springs.
The sentencing, which took up the entire morning, was moved to a larger courtroom at the Jefferson County Administration and Courts Facility to accommodate family and friends of the victim and Daniels.
Among those testifying were former state Sen. Norma Anderson, who was Quinton’s aunt, and Jefferson County Clerk Pam Anderson, who was a cousin.
Daniels also was sentenced to 18 months in prison for tampering with physical evidence, one year for failure to report an accident and 90 days for leaving the scene of an accident. Those sentences will be served concurrently with the most serious charge.
