Gardening can be difficult enough without having to deal with hand fatigue from using uncomfortable tools. Ergonomically sound hand tools are those designed to match the body’s natural movement and compensate for the repetitive motions found in most gardening tasks.

Corona Clipper and the Ergonomics Center of North Carolina at North Carolina State University recommend looking for these qualities in a well-designed garden tool:

Weight: A tool that’s too heavy will tire the hand faster, but one that’s too light might not last through the season. Make sure the tool feels solid enough to stand up to years of hard labor, but won’t wear out the hands.

Balance: Test the tool to ensure it distributes weight evenly by holding the tool comfortably and simulating its working action.

Grip dimensions: A larger grip diameter may mean better control, but a grip that’s too large will cause fatigue. Compare several grip dimensions for the best fit.

Grip texture: Grip the tool handle to make sure the surface feels soft and offers a nonslip grip. Researchers recommend experimenting with grip textures and rating how each feels in the hand.

Ease of maintenance: Construction and quality contribute to a tool’s value in terms of durability, ease of maintenance and overall enjoyment. Higher-quality tools may cost more, but because they’ll last for many years, they’re worth the initial investment.
