A cache of 11 weapons found in the Cache la Poudre River Sunday were stolen in Nebraska last month, the Weld County Sheriff’s office said today.
A jogger running along East 18th Street in Greeley spotted the cache of weapons about 6 p.m. Sunday.
Union Colony Fire Rescue Authority dive team members in cold-water gear recovered nine guns visible in about 18 inches of water and two more under a nearby bridge. In all, divers retrieved one pistol and 10 rifles.
Because of how the guns were placed, investigators believe they were stored there and did not accidentally fall into the river from a passing car or truck. The spot where the guns were found is near the Greeley-Weld County Airport and the National Guard Armory, said Sheriff’s Department spokesman Shane Scofield.
“It’s not something you find every day,” he said..
