Nobel Prize-winning biochemist Tom Cech will return to the University of Colorado at Boulder full time next year, after eight years as head of the prestigious Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Maryland.

Cech said he was pulled back by the lure of the laboratory and teaching — and pitches by Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper.

Ritter and Hickenlooper both offered strong commitments to science education and biotechnology, according to Cech.

“I’m ready to put my energy back into doing some science, making some more discoveries maybe,” Cech said from his Maryland office.
