ESTES PARK — Residents voted by more than 2 to 1 Tuesday to make it more difficult to write new chapters in the history of the 75-acre neighborhood around the stately Stanley Hotel.

A proposal that requires town fathers to get voter approval before selling any of four publicly owned properties in the historic district passed 1,044 to 408.

The move is aimed at tripping up a city plan to sell 7 acres for $1.25 million to a developer for the proposed Estes Wind shopping and condo complex.

The historic district was created in 1994 around the Stanley Hotel, a major tourist attraction that opened in 1909 and was an inspiration for Stephen King’s book “The Shining,” and the movie based on it. Joey Bunch, The Denver Post
