A mother was formally charged Monday with child abuse after her infant son allegedly ingested methamphetamine.
Katriece Trujillo, 27, was charged by the Denver District Attorney’s Office with one count of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury.
The charge alleges that Trujillo was caring for her 3-month-old son when he ingested the drug sometime on March 27 or 28, according to prosecutors.
Trujillo told investigators she bought $40 of meth and “accidentally” mixed it with baby formula, according to court documents.
After the admission, Trujillo denied it.
The infant’s father, Anthony Kammann, told investigators that Trujillo had put the meth next to the baby bottle and that it “fell into the bottle,” the affidavit said.
The baby was taken to Children’s Hospital on March 28, suffering seizures, and it was determined that methamphetamine racked his system, police said.
The child has since been released to the protective custody of child services.
Trujillo has a lengthy criminal record in six counties, including arrests for assault, failure to appear and traffic offenses, but no drug-related offenses, according to public records.
Trujillo is being held at the Denver County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
She is set to appear in Denver County Court on Wednesday to be advised of the charge.
