LONGMONT, Colo.—A Firestone third-grader has been diagnosed with a drug-resistant staph infection known as MRSA (MUR’-suh).

It’s the third MRSA case in the St. Vrain Valley School District since February.

District spokesman John Poynton said Monday the student was diagnosed last week and is being kept home. The child’s siblings are also staying home until they can be checked by a doctor.

Two St. Vrain Valley students were treated for MRSA in February. One attends Longmont High School and the other attends Twin Peaks Charter Academy. Officials say there was no known connection between those cases.

MRSA mostly causes skin infections, such as boils and abscesses. But it can sometimes spread to cause life-threatening blood infections.
