Opening highlights

Shot

Ian Poulter, right, used an 8-iron to ace the 170-yard, par-3 16th hole. It was the 11th ace in Masters history on the hole, the last coming from Trevor Immelman in 2005.

Chip in

Tiger Woods chipped in for eagle from behind the 15th green. It was the only eagle of the day at the 530-yard, par-5 hole.

Aim

Poulter, Jim Furyk and Johnson Wagner hit 16-of-18 greens in regulation. Furyk and Poulter finished with 70s. Wagner, the last man into this year’s field, shot a 72.

WORSTS

Really down days

Walk around Augusta.

The good news is that
72-year-old Gary Player played in his 51st Masters, a
record. The bad news is that he finished with an 83, highest
score in the 94-player field.

Up-and-down-down-down round.

Playing in his sixth
Masters, but first in the last five years, Steve Lowery
shot an 81. Lowery had three birdies, but negated that
with eight bogeys and two double bogeys.

Blade runners.

Anders Hansen and Hunter Mahan putted
34 times each during the first round. The duo shot 80
and 77, respectively.

Hole of the day

465-yard, par-4 18th.

Some of the most enduring Masters photos feature the crowds lining both sides of this fairway when the final-round leader tees off. After Thursday, there’s no telling who that might be — or if they will want any part of the hole. No. 18 played at 4.34 strokes in the opening round, the toughest on the course. None of the players in the field made a birdie there.
