CHICAGO — A message scrawled in a bathroom — “Be prepared to die on 4/14” — shut down St. Xavier University on Chicago’s southwest side Monday as well as two adjoining high schools and a pair of nearby elementary schools.

The west-side Malcolm X College evacuated students and canceled daytime classes Monday after a similar threat was found. And Michigan’s Oakland University was closed Monday because of threatening graffiti mentioning April 14.

Meanwhile, hundreds of campus officers spent Monday at the National Campus Security Summit in Edmond, Okla., comparing notes, training and hearing from some of their colleagues who have gone through campus shootings.

Steven Healy, the chief of police at Princeton University, said it is “absolutely essential” for colleges to develop a behavioral-threat-assessment process.

Wednesday is the first anniversary of the Virginia Tech shootings.
