A storage facility owner in Greeley made a surprising discovery today when he opened an unpaid storage unit to evict the contents: stuff that had been stolen from him, as well as items taken from nearby units.
The man who had rented the unit at A Affordable Secure Storage, it turned out, was already in police custody in Grand Junction.
The Weld County Sheriff’s Office did not identify the unit’s renter, since the investigation was still under way. Sgt. Shane Scofield was not yet sure what the man had been charged with in Mesa County.
“He may have a story to tell, but we’ll wait and see what he says before we release his name,” Scofield said.
There was perhaps $5,000 worth of stolen goods in the storage bay, including a washer and dryer, antiques, a dirt bike, and toys.
At least three units in the complex had been raided, but the thief failed to move the items very far, Scofield said.
