Getting your player ready...

CSU defensive coordinator Larry Kerr returns after a five-year hiatus. In his absence, CSU’s once-dominant defense eroded, especially against the run.

Q: What differences do you see in Steve Fairchild since he left CSU?

A: He sees a bigger picture now. Obviously that’s necessary for a head coach. He’s more concerned about more things. He has a lot more awareness of all situations. He knows what he wants to do. He seeks advice and other opinions first. For example, the way we structure practice. The tempo is really good and the players have responded.

Q: Do you find yourself at least mentally comparing your current players with some of the ones you coached at CSU in the past?

A: I’m trying not to make too many comparisons. I don’t know that it’s fair before you know guys better and get acquainted with them to say, “This guy reminds me of so and so.”

Q: The biggest defensive void from the experience standpoint is at cornerback. How is the progress there?

A: We have three healthy guys (Nick Oppenneer, Ivory Herd, Brandon Owens), and it’s whoever shows on a given day. They are getting a lot of great reps. Herd and Owens have made the greatest strides, and Oppenneer is solid and smart. The big question is the guys coming in during the fall.

Q: Have you gotten a feel for how the Mountain West Conference has changed since you left?

A: I looked at a few different (tapes). The conference is very strong. I don’t want to slight anyone, but BYU, Utah and TCU have pretty extensively been at the top.

Q: What will it take to get the defense back to the level you enjoyed?

A: It will take time. We’ve got to continue to find the strengths of each player and exactly what to do with their strengths. We want to develop really good leaders and build the enthusiasm of playing the game. The process will take time. The talent is there. You have to develop more depth because you need more competition and have players push each other.

Q: Which players have impressed you so far?

A: The two safeties (Klint Kubiak and Mike Pagnotta). Matt Rupp is a really nice tackle. I’d put Tommie Hill in that category before he was hurt (shoulder surgery). The linebackers all bring something to the table. I haven’t seen the level I want to see, but there’s a lot of potential there. It’s where the competition is the closest.

Q: What did you miss most when you were away from CSU?

A: Friends, in terms of the coaching staff and friends in the community.
