Defensive newcomers. Redshirt freshman nose tackle Nuku Latu and redshirt freshman linebacker Mychal Sisson played entirely with the first unit, and defensive coordinator Larry Kerr was impressed with both of them.
Who will start at quarterback? Probably Billy Farris based on senior leadership. His progress tailed off in the final week, and Grant Stucker made a strong bid Saturday, especially with his running. No one, however, will knock BYU’s Max Hall or Utah’s Brian Johnson out of the race for all-MWC honors.
Besides QB, what other positions will be decided in the fall? Kerr calls his linebacking units No. 1 and No. 1A, although Jeff Horinek and Ricky Brewer are clearly ahead of the rest. Cornerback was a pleasant surprise, given the lack of experience, but Elijah-Blu Smith (foot) and DeAngelo Wilkinson (shoulder) will be in competition for playing time. The punting position remains up for grabs.
Where is help in the fall needed? Wide receiver. Freshman Marquise Law and junior-college transfer Ryan Gardner will be asked to help immediately.
Injury watch. Defensive end Tommie Hill was having a spectacular spring before a shoulder injury. He has undergone surgery and insists he will be ready in the fall. Kory Sperry played more than anyone imagined just six months after ACL surgery, and he reported no setbacks.
