The University of Denver hockey team signed four players to national letters of intent, including David Carle, brother of former Pioneers standout and current San Jose Sharks defenseman Matt Carle.

DU coach George Gwozdecky added to the team’s roster: Carle, of Anchorage, Alaska; Joe Colborne, Calgary, Alberta; Nate Dewhurst, Johnston, Iowa; and Stepan Novotny, Prague, Czech Republic.

Eagles forced to seventh game.

The Colorado Eagles lost to Texas 5-4 in the Central Hockey League’s Northern Conference finals in Loveland, forcing a Game 7 to decide the series.

Texas’ Anders Strome scored a power-play goal at 17:03 in the third period, putting the Brahmas up 5-3. Ed McGrane scored for the Eagles at 18:55, but it wasn’t enough.

Game 7 will be played in Loveland on Wednesday, as the Eagles will attempt to head back to the championship series to defend their title as league champions.

DU women golfers seize share of lead.

Denver teammates Katie Kempter and Stephanie Sherlock shot 2-under-par 70s in Monday’s opening round and shared the lead at the Sun Belt Conference women’s golf championship in Muscle Shoals, Ala.

The No. 9-ranked and four-time defending SBC champion Pioneers combined for an even-par 288 to lead the team standings. South Alabama, Florida International and Middle Tennessee are tied for second place at 17-over 305. Florida International’s Paula Hurtado is in third place at 1-under 71.

• The Denver men are four shots off the team lead after a first-round 284 put them behind Louisiana- Lafayette.

Troy’s Michael McGrady leads the field at 5-under 67. Four players, including Denver’s Espen Kofstad, trail in second place at 3-under 69.

German team to play Rapids.

Borussia Moenchengladbach, which leads Germany’s second division, will play exhibition games at FC Dallas and the Colorado Rapids in July during a 10-day preseason training camp in the United States. The tour is part of a cooperation agreement between the German league and Major League Soccer that was reached 13 months ago.

Arapahoe Park sets racing schedule.

The $125,000 Mile High Futurity and the $100,000 Rocky Mountain Futurity highlight the nine quarter horse events and the 36-date Arapahoe Park racing schedule released Monday. The Aurora track starts its mixed meet season May 24 and runs through Aug. 10, covering every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The schedule awaits approval from the Colorado State Racing Commission.

CC joins water polo field.

The Colorado College women’s water polo team earned an at-large berth in the NCAA Division III championship tournament. The Tigers earned one of three at-large bids after finishing second behind automatic qualifier Carthage College at the Midwest Regional last weekend. The championship tournament runs May 2-4 at Connecticut College.
