The will be no announcement. The lineup, however, has spoken volumes about the second base situation. Clint Barmes is starting again tonight at Coors Field, making it clear that he’s moved up on the depth chart ahead of rookie Jayson Nix and reserve Jeff Baker.
“I won’t be holding a press conference to talk about our second base situation. I am going to continue to find opportunities for them all to maximize production. I owe to Nix to get him back in there. It’s the balancing act I have,” manager Clint Hurdle said, before adding,
“But Barmes is going to get first shot now and have every opportunity to ride the momentum he’s picked up.”
Barmes has maintained an even keel about his silent promotion. Everyday he checks the lineup, hoping he’s in it. Beyond that, he’s not making anything more of his strong April.
“I am just trying to take advantage of every opportunity I get,” Barmes said today.
The Phillies arrive in Denver for a two-game series after an impressive win over the Mets last night at home. Brad Lidge, a former Cherry Creek product, closed the game out. This is Philadelphia’s first trip to town since the Rockies swept them in the National League Division Series. Shortstop Jimmy Rollins, who narrowly edged Matt Holliday for league MVP honors, is not with the team. He was placed on the disabled list with a sprained ankle.
