DENVER—U.S. Forest Service Chief Gail Kimbell has presented a grant to a Colorado program as part of a nationwide, $2 million effort to get children outdoors to learn about the national forests and grasslands.

Kimbell announced the $33,000 grant Thursday in Denver, where a program offers outdoors education for children across Colorado. Money from groups and other agencies will raise the total funding to $216,000.

It’s one of 16 recipients of this year’s “Kids in the Woods” awards.

Another recipient in the region is a program in South Dakota and Nebraska that gives children a chance to learn about fossils and geology.
