A motorist was killed early this morning after being hit by a truck on the Boulder Turnpike.

The victim was involved in a single-car accident just after midnight near U.S. 36 and 80th Avenue, according to the Westminster Police Department.

People in the single-car accident got out of the 2004 Chrysler 4-door and were on the highway when two men in their 20s were struck by an eastbound semi-truck, police said.

Robert Cano, 21, of Thornton died at the scene. Javier Lerma, 23, of Northglenn was taken to St. Anthony’s Central Hospital with critical injuries.

The single-car accident and subsequent fatal accident are being investigated by police.

Eastbound lanes of the highway were shut down until about 5:30 a.m. because of the incident, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
