A Senate committee on Thursday killed a bill that was originally aimed at curbing the Regional Transportation District’s power of eminent domain.

House Bill 1278, as drafted early in the legislative session, spelled out circumstances by which RTD could acquire private property only for “public transit purposes.”

When the amended House version reached the Senate’s government committee this week, the measure had been stripped to only a pledge by RTD to sell land it acquires back to the original owner if the transit agency ends up not needing it.
