The speed limit on the stretch of Interstate 25 between Belleview Avenue and Broadway will be raised, now that the road has been improved as part of the recently completed T-REX project.

Currently, the speed limit is set at 55 mph. Between Belleview and Yale avenues, the new limit will be 65 mph. From Yale to Broadway, drivers must throttle down to 60.

The road improvements are causing some motorists to bust the speed limit, while others are sticking to the double nickel.

That widespread variance in speed can lead to aggressive driving and accidents, said Colorado Department of Transportation spokesman Stacey Stegman. “Most of us drive at a speed that we feel is reasonable for conditions. We try and set a speed that fits,” she said.

CDOT has given the Denver Police Department $100,000 to increase enforcement on the road, she added. “There is a need to assure people they shouldn’t take advantage” of the increased limit, she said.

The higher speed limit will go into effect Friday.Tom McGhee: 303-954-1671 or tmcghee@denverpost.com
