LOS ANGELES — Saturday night’s game at Dodger Stadium came to a stunning and frightening halt on the first pitch of the fourth inning when home-plate umpire Kerwin Danley was hit in the jaw by a 96 mph fastball from Dodgers pitcher Brad Penny.

Rockies third baseman Garrett Atkins was batting at the time. Danley, 47, went down immediately, and lay flat on his back near home plate for several minutes.

He was loaded into the ambulance on a stretcher. Danley lost consciousness for a few seconds, but he was breathing, alert and coherent. He was taken to Los Angeles’ Good Samaritan Hospital as a precautionary measure.

First-base umpire Angel Campos replaced Danley behind the plate.
