Fruita’s mountain bike culture continues to spread its wings with the introduction of Hot Tomato on Aspen Avenue, a specialty pizza parlor opened up by a pair of former Over the Edge bike shop employees who have shifted gears from retailers to restaurateurs.

The space formerly occupied by Diorio’s of Fruita has been renovated and rededicated to cuisine crafted from locally produced, farm- fresh ingredients, including salads, sandwiches and the hot-selling Granny’s Pesto pizza. All the dough, whether for pizza or sandwiches, is made fresh every morning, and the pizzas are hand-tossed. Cold New Belgium brews are on tap, and local Palisade and Ska brews are sold by the bottle. Espresso is always available, and breakfast offerings should be available soon.

Stop in on your way to or from the trailhead at this weekend’s annual 18 Hours of Fruita mountain bike race.
