One motorist is dead and a number of others injured after at least nine vehicles collided in heavy snow on Interstate 70 near Watkins Road.
The chain reaction pile-up began when a woman driving a white BMW ran into a Colorado State Patrol car parked on a median at Box Elder Bridge, where the officer was investigating an earlier accident.
Another car then ran into a Colorado Department of Transportation pick up truck that was blocking traffic while the officer was outside the car.
“Then there was a chain reaction all on the bridge, a huge pile up. I counted nine cars and pickups all mixed together and three semi trucks,” said Master Trooper Ron Watkins.
A tractor trailer involved in one of the crashes was loaded up with bricks that dumped onto another car, killing the woman inside, according to 9News.
A woman driving a pickup truck ran into the back of a semi truck about a half mile from the scene and was taken to a hospital after being extricated from the vehicle, which was underneath the truck.
State Patrol closed eastbound I-70 at Watkins and eastbound I-70 at Airpark and westbound I-70 at Bennett.
Westbound I-70 has since reopened. Eastbound was still closed at 7:30 p.m.
