BOULDER — Boulder County Public Health officials are testing prairie dogs at Valmont Butte for plague.
Officials say a decline in the prairie dog population may be a sign the rodents may be diseased and are warning people to stay away from them. The county is collecting flea samples this weekend for the testing.
Officials discovered the drop in the prairie dog population while it was about to relocate them. The city of Boulder thought their numbers might have increased up to 60 percent since last year but instead found a decrease of about 75 percent.
