Roses like sun at least six hours a day — and water. Joan Franson, Rocky Mountain district director for the American Rose Society, says a mature rose needs about an inch of water a week in the summer. Reduce watering in mid-August, and if the winter is dry, water monthly. These are roses that require less water:

Old garden roses: Albas, damasks, gallicas

Hybrid teas, grandifloras, floribundas and polyanthas: Condesa de Sastago, Peace, Queen Elizabeth, Sutter’s Gold, Tiffany, Yankee Doodle, Betty Prior, Eutin, Iceberg, Nearly Wild, Simplicity, The Fairy

Shrub roses: Rugosa, Buck, Canadian Hardy, Kordes, Meidiland

Climbers: American Pillar, Blaze, Doubloons, Lawrence Johnston, New Dawn, Victorian Memory.
