COLORADO SPRINGS — Robert Isaac, the first mayor of Colorado Springs to be elected by popular vote, died Friday at the age of 80.
Isaac was elected mayor in 1979 and retired in 1997, with two years left on his last term.
He died from complications of pneumonia Friday afternoon at the Union Printers home.
Isaac was born in Colorado Springs in 1928, the son of a Lebanese immigrant, and attended Colorado Springs public schools. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in West Point and received a law degree from the University of Southern California. Before 1979, the members of the Colorado Springs City Council picked a mayor from their own ranks. Isaac was the first mayor elected by the people.
