Getting your player ready...

Dear Peter,

You are an exceptional person and athlete; a beautiful skater; an extremely talented and skillful ice hockey player; an admired and special sports figure in Colorado and throughout the world!

I personally want to thank you for your return to the Colorado Avalanche and our state, for your remarkable presence on the ice and in the ice arena, for all the thrills and special moments you provide and in particular for the “comeback season” you so skillfully contributed to the Colorado Avalanche organization and us, the fans.

You have put your physical health and spirit in harm’s way to continue your professional career as an ice hockey player, and I respect you for that. It was very obvious to me that the competition during the regular- season games but especially during the first-round series and most of all the second-round series against the Detroit Red Wings that their fear and insecurity of what you can do was such an immense threat to them, that they were aiming for you — turning the game into murder and mayhem and themselves into thugs!

If your decision to retire from ice hockey is based on your health, I respect it, but I want you to know that in my eyes, you are the best of the best and that you will always have a place in the hearts and minds of your fans in Colorado and throughout the world!

Sincerely,

MaryAnn Woods
