The Colorado State, Colorado and Denver men’s golf teams were in the field of the NCAA Division I tournament after seeds and pairings for the 81-team field were announced Monday.
Colorado State, which earned an automatic bid after winning its first Mountain West Conference Tournament, will play in the East Regional at the Council Fire Golf Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Colorado and Denver earned at-large bids. The Buffaloes will play in the Central Regional in Columbus, Ohio, at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course. The Pioneers will tee off in the West Regional at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.
Regional rounds begin May 15.
UCCS golfers tied for lead.
The Colorado-Colorado Springs men’s golf team was tied for the lead of the NCAA Division II Northwest Regional after the first round at Adobe Creek Golf Club in Petaluma, Calif.
UCCS’ Todd Napikoski shot an even-par 72 and is one of five golfers at the top of the leaderboard. Clifton Sebra of Colorado Christian, Scott Crichton of Western New Mexico, Brandon Loesch of Minnesota State and UCCS’ Brian Morfeld also shot first-round 72s.
Minnesota State is tied with UCCS at 8-over 296 in the team standings.
UNC’s Matthews signs with Browns.
Asa Matthews, a former linebacker at Northern Colorado, signed a rookie free-agent contract with the Cleveland Browns. Matthews, who tried out for Cleveland at a rookie mini-camp last week, was an honorable mention all-Big Sky player in 2006.
Mammoth player wins award.
Colorado Mammoth forward Dan Carey earned the National Lacrosse League’s sportsmanship award. Carey had 22 goals and 27 assists in 11 games before his season ended due to an injury. In 43 career NLL games, Carey has just 11 penalty minutes — and none this season. Carey, after knocking out Calgary’s Steve Dietrich in the season-opening game, apologized to the veteran goalkeeper.
Season over for DU women’s lacrosse.
The University of Denver women’s lacrosse team, ranked among the top 20 teams through most of the season, did not earn a berth to the 16-team NCAA Tournament after pairings were announced.
The Pioneers, then ranked No. 17, were upset by No. 20 Stanford last week in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship game. The Cardinal earned the league’s automatic bid.
