A committee of the Denver City Council on Wednesday forwarded to the full council a ballot initiative to require police to impound cars of unlicensed drivers.

The supporters of the proposal, Future Denver, gathered enough signatures to force the proposal on the August ballot even though some council members fear it unfairly targets illegal immigrants.

The council, under city law, must place the proposal before the voters.

The vehicles could be released with a $2,500 bond and a $100 impound fee.
