Denver International Airport is losing its nonstop flight to Munich, Germany, this fall, with the route expected to return next year.

Lufthansa German Airlines plans to stop flying the route in late October and resume it year-round in March.

The airline is seeing strong demand in Asia for its service.

“The (Munich) flight did perform well, and we regrettably are simply just short an aircraft,” said Lufthansa spokeswoman Jennifer Urbaniak.

Denver airport and economic-development officials spent years courting Lufthansa for the Denver-Munich route, which was launched in March 2007. Lufthansa also flies daily from Denver to Frankfurt.

DIA, the state and the Metro Denver Economic Development Corp. provided a $2 million incentive package for Lufthansa to start the service to Munich.

Metro Denver Economic Development Corp. executive vice president Tom Clark said there will be “a conversation” about options such as prorating the incentives.
