A motorist was killed at about 1:23 p.m. this afternoon after being hit by a minivan driving the wrong way on Interstate 70 on the west edge of Grand Junction, police reported.
The victim was in a Red Chevrolet Monte Carlo eastbound on Interstate 70 when the minivan entered the eastbound I-70 lanes headed west.
Officer T.J. Rix said the two vehicles collided head-on, with officers estimating the speed on impact at more than 60 mph.
A small child was extricated from the Monte Carlo and taken to a local hospital, as was the woman who was driving the minivan. Rix said the sex of the person driving the Monte Carlo has yet to be determined.
The eastbound lanes of that stretch of I-70 will be closed until 6 p.m. and traffic will be detoured around the scene, said Rix.
