All southbound lanes of Interstate 225 beginning at South Tamarac Parkway closed Monday afternoon for about two hours so road crews could make emergency repairs to an unstable sign, the Colorado Department of Transportation said.

Initially, CDOT thought the repairs might continue through rush hour, but crews had fixed the problem by 2:45 p.m.

The sign is held above the highway by posts on both sides of the roadway.

Caps that anchor the steel arms holding the sign to the posts had come loose, said CDOT spokeswoman Stacey Stegman.

“The cap is resting on the top of the pole rather than seated in its proper position. If there was a collision or heavy winds, that could cause problems. If it were to cause the pole to bend, it could come down on the highway,” she said.

Wind and other weather conditions could have loosened the caps, she said.
